There is always one person in every family who keeps things running smoothly.

They remember birthdays, make the calls, resolve awkwardness, and step in before situations escalate. They adjust quietly, forgive quickly, and rarely make an issue out of anything.

On the surface, this person is appreciated. 

In reality, they are often the least valued.

If you have ever felt like your effort goes unnoticed while others do far less and still receive the same, or even more consideration, you are not imagining it. There is a pattern at play here, and it has very little to do with kindness and everything to do with how behavior shapes relationships.

What families often label as being “nice” is rarely just kindness. It is a mix of conflict avoidance, over-accommodation, and an unspoken agreement to keep the peace at any personal cost. It looks mature and responsible, but over time it quietly shifts the balance of power.

Because relationships, especially within families, do not run on intentions. They run on patterns.

When you consistently let things go, avoid difficult conversations, or step in to maintain harmony, you remove any pressure on others to adjust. There are no consequences, no discomfort, and no reason for anyone else to reconsider their behavior.

This is how imbalance begins.

It does not happen overnight. It builds gradually. You become the person who will understand, who will manage, who will not react. And once that role is established, it becomes convenient for everyone else to keep it that way.

The problem is not that people deliberately decide to take you for granted. The problem is that they learn they can.

Recently, I revisited a tale: "The Little Match Girl" by Hans Christian Andersen. 

Despite its brevity, this story resonated with me profoundly, stirring emotions that lingered long after I closed the book. It’s remarkable how a few pages can ignite such a firestorm of feelings — sadness, compassion, and reflection.

The Story that Moved My Soul

"The Little Match Girl" is set on a freezing New Year’s Eve. The protagonist is a young, impoverished girl trying to sell matches on the street. Barefoot and dressed in tattered clothes, she endures the bitter cold and the indifference of passersby. 

To keep herself warm, she strikes the matches one by one, each brief flare conjuring vivid visions of comfort and joy — a warm stove, a sumptuous feast, and a loving grandmother. 

Tragically, as the night unfolds, the girl succumbs to the cold, her small body found lifeless the next morning. 

However, in her final moments, she dreams of ascending to heaven with her grandmother, finding solace and warmth at last.

Reading this as an adult was an entirely different experience from encountering it as a child. As a child, I remembered feeling sad but not fully grasping the depth of the story’s themes. Now, the plight of the little match girl feels all too real, a reflection of struggles that persist in many corners of our world.

The Girl on the Street: A Vivid and Haunting Image

I couldn’t shake the image of the girl shivering in the snow. Andersen’s descriptions are so vivid that I could almost feel the biting wind against my skin and see her tiny hands turning numb. As the calendar inches closer to December 31st, there’s a palpable shift in the air. 

December holds a unique charm—a mix of nostalgia, celebration, and introspection. 

It’s a time to reflect on the months gone by, to cherish the moments that defined the year, and to prepare for the fresh start that a new year promises. 

1. A Time for Reflection

The end of the year is synonymous with reflection. It’s the perfect opportunity to pause and take stock of your life. Whether it’s reviewing personal achievements, professional milestones, or even lessons learned from challenges, this period allows for meaningful introspection. Many people in India perform small pujas or rituals at home to express gratitude and seek blessings for the year ahead. Globally, this is echoed through journaling, gratitude lists, or year-end evaluations.

2. The Magic of the Festive Season

Streets are lit up with vibrant decorations, malls are bustling with festive sales, and homes are filled with the aroma of traditional sweets like laddoos, plum cakes, gajar halwa, and sarso saag. Globally, the holiday season’s warmth—from Christmas to Hanukkah to Kwanzaa—creates a shared sense of joy and community.
